The Council and Dimensions

Spacer

This document, entitled Stoke Sport and Physical Activity Strategy, makes interesting reading. The following quotes really make one wonder what is happening inside the Council.

Re. swimming facilities: "It is likely that SoTCC will continue to be the major provider of this type of facility, and mechanisms therefore need to be found to maximise the community benefits whilst reducing costs as far as possible".

"Identify sports with particular attraction to those least active, and seek to develop/improve the facilities at a local level".

"The focus must therefore be on encouraging more use of very local facilities – both community centres and green spaces".

"Retain sport and active recreation sites unless detailed local research shows that they are no longer required for that, or any other sport or physical activity".

So, in the case of Dimensions, and referring to the quotes highlighted in red above, the Council is not only ignoring the Community, but also the recommendations of its own Officer who wrote this.

Is it any wonder that the Officer who wrote this is leaving the Council?

A great pity that the Community can not disown this Council.

Our modern, light and friendly centre offers a fantasy themed leisure pool with ‘dragon slide’, hot spa pools, ‘water rapids’ and a tropical beach bar.

On dry land, Dimensions also includes a sports hall, outdoor synthetic football pitches and access to Dynamics Health and Fitness Club. We also have a spinning studio and licensed café bar.

We offer a wide and varied range of leisure services for all the family:

  • Leisure swim
  • Family swim
  • Swimming lessons
  • Aquatots
  • Aqua fit
  • Children's birthday parties
  • Football
  • Basketball
  • Badminton
  • Table tennis
  • Roller disco
  • Spinning
  • Hockey
  • Sporting events
Quite a lot of swimming-related activities advertised!

So, after the 2008 budget is implemented, this would have to become something like:

Our modern, light and friendly centre offers a sports hall, outdoor synthetic football pitches and access to Dynamics Health and Fitness Club. We also have a spinning studio and licensed café bar. Our star attraction is a hole in the ground where we used to have a splash pool.

We offer a fairly narrow and not very varied range of leisure services for most of the family (please note: if you are very young, elderly or disabled, we have withdrawn most services that would have been useable by you):

  • Football
  • Basketball
  • Badminton
  • Table tennis
  • Roller disco
  • Spinning
  • Hockey
  • Sporting events
What fantasy will they actually put on their website?

Puzzled

If Dimensions Leisure Centre is Googled, pages like this can be found. This is good, genuine, free, publicity for Stoke-on-Trent. Yet, the Council wants to scrap this and pay some individuals vastly inflated salaries to put out propaganda.

We would like the Council to justify this.

On 28th February, the Council voted by 29 votes to 21 to close the pool.

They probably want this to happen at the end of the Financial Year - that is at the end of March.

If you want to reverse this decision ...

Use the pool
... or lose it!

For at least the next month, the pool needs to be in constant use - to show the Council that they are wrong.

Yes, there still are honourable councillors in Stoke-on-Trent!

Cllr. Jean Edwards

Cllr David Conway

27th February 2008

Burslem North Ward Councillors Jean Edwards and David Conway last night left the Labour Group on the City Council over the issue of the closure of the pool at Dimensions.

They tried to get the Labour Group to change the budget and leave Dimensions alone.

They argued their corner for Dimensions to stay, but lost on the vote.

They then walked out and said that they no longer wanted to stay with the Group.

They have asked us to keep the petition going, and have said that they, along with others who are sympathetic to our cause, will continue to fight for it to remain open.

Two other local Councillors have already signed the petition.

Councillors, we respect your actions.

Thank you.
