Grids and Drainage
Drainage Grids

The following is from the Council's website
(
www.stoke.gov.uk/ccm/navigation/environment/drainage-and-sewers)

Grid cleaning - about this service

We are responsible for routine emptying and emergency clearance of grids and drainage when flooding of roads or pavements happens.

You are responsible for protecting your own property from flooding. You can find advice on how to do this on the Environment Agency website.

The grids are cleaned on average once a year.  However, after a reported blocked grid has been inspected, additional cleaning can be arranged if there is a possible risk of damage to property.

To report a blocked grid you'll need the following information:

  • The exact location of the problem grid
  • Your name, address, telephone number and email address (if you have one)
  • A brief description of the problem

Please contact Stoke-on-Call or visit your nearest Local Centre to report any problems with blocked grids or gullies.

We have decided to "adopt" a number of grids along (or just off) Hamil Road so we can follow their fate.

"The grids are cleaned on average once a year". Oh no they're not! The particular grids we have adopted have been cleaned precisely twice since November 2001 (apart from Grid 3 which was installed in 2008 when the pavement was altered and has never been cleaned) - which makes the average approximately every three years and ten months (and counting ... ). The last cleaning only happened because one of the local Councillors went walkabout, and was horrified to see a small tree growing out of one of the grids!

"additional cleaning can be arranged if there is a possible risk of damage to property" - how about risk to health?

"To report a blocked grid you'll need the following information: ... A brief description of the problem" - probably the briefest description available would be "It's blocked!"

The Grids - haven't called them drains because they don't!

? YOUR ?
Question Time
At the beginning of each Council meeting, your City Council has a 'Your Question Time' which enables people who live and work within the City to submit questions to the Elected Mayor or Chief Executive about Council Services.
Your question time will have a dedicated time slot of 30 minutes and any member of the public will be allowed to submit up to 2 questions (maximum 150 words for each).
Questions should be submitted on a request form available from:
Member Services
~ Helen Barr/Julie Harvey
Tel: 01782 232784
or e-mail

your.questions@stoke.gov.uk

You can send us a question at any time. When we have received your question we will write to you to tell you when your question will be answered. As long as it is received by 12 pm ten clear working days before the council meeting is held, and contains no more than 150 words, it will be asked at the next council meeting.
What happens at the meeting?

When you arrive at the Council meeting to ask your question, staff from the Member Services (Chief Executive's Directorate) will be available to explain what happens to you and give you any help you may need. If you cannot attend the council meeting you will receive a written reply to your question.
